Rooted in History, Supported by Partnership: Alison & Eric Purtle and 607 Guest House

In Boone, Iowa, history isn’t just preserved—it’s experienced. For Alison and Eric Purtle, that vision came to life when they opened 607 Guest House in August 2023 with the support of a trusted financial partner: MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union.

A Home with a Story to Tell

Twenty-five years ago, a once-vacant property that had sat empty for years became Alison and Eric’s first home — and the beginning of a much bigger story. Built in 1867—the same year the first railroad tracks were laid in Iowa—the property carries deep historical roots. Once owned by railroad tycoon John Insley Blair, the home’s legacy inspired Alison to create a space where guests could connect with history and each other.

Rather than modernizing away its character, they preserved its charm. Every detail tells a story from 150-year-old refinished floors to even functional window weights and pulleys. Three themed bedrooms—the Kate Shelley Room, Eisenhower Room, and Prairie Rose Room—reflects Iowa’s rich history, from railroad-inspired décor to a train and lantern scavenger hunt. The logo, a vintage lit lantern, serves as the visual identity of 607 Guest House — a deliberate nod to the local legend of Kate Shelley, the 1800s era of the home, and the age-old tradition of hospitality.

The home accommodates up to 10 overnight guests, making it ideal for family getaways, girls’ weekends, or small group retreats. While overnight stays are at the heart of what the 607 Guest House offers, it is also available for day rentals or event retreats, offering a unique venue in the heart of Boone. Whether it’s a small corporate gathering, a creative workshop, or an intimate celebration, the Guest House provides a historic, welcoming space that blends comfort and character.

The Joy of Guest Connections

Alison treasures the personal connections formed at 607 Guest House. Guests often share photos, write in the guestbook, or leave glowing online reviews highlighting the thoughtful details and inviting atmosphere. With over a hundred fifty 5-star reviews, the home has quickly become a beloved destination in Boone. In 2026, the 607 Guest House will welcome its 1,000th guest — a milestone that speaks to the real, meaningful economic impact a locally owned vacation rental can have which is also featured in the 2026 Travel Iowa Guide.

With the changing seasons, the 607 Guest House becomes even more magical — especially during the Santa Train season. Families visiting will find every room of the house decorated with train-inspired holiday spirit, with a special gift for every child. For Alison, those shared memories are a reminder of exactly why they started the 607 Guest House — to create meaningful experiences that guests carry with them for years to come.

A Trusted Financial Partner

Behind every small business success story is a strong support system, and for Alison and Eric, that includes MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union. Their relationship with MEMBERS1st didn’t start with a business plan — it started in 1997, when they moved to Boone and established their personal accounts. When their family grew, Members 1st is where they opened accounts for their children too. So, when the time came to launch 607 Guest House, the decision of where to bank wasn’t a difficult one.

“It came down to trust,” Alison explained. “We wanted a financial partner—not just a place to bank.”

With competitive rates, lower fees, and easy-to-use online banking tools, Members 1st gave their money the opportunity to work better for the business from day one.

Just as important as the financial tools was the personal service.

“When we walk in, they know us by name,” she said. “That kind of relationship makes a big difference when you’re starting and growing a business.”

By keeping both her personal and business accounts with MEMBERS1st, Alison has also been able to streamline her finances, saving time and staying organized as her business continues to grow.

Supporting Members Through Every Stage

Alison and Eric’s story illustrates how MEMBERS1st supports members at every stage—whether starting a new venture, expanding an existing business, or managing day-to-day operations. Local decision-making, personalized guidance, and tailored financial solutions make it easier for members like Alison & Eric to pursue their goals with confidence.

Looking Ahead

As 607 Guest House continues to welcome visitors and host retreats, Alison remains focused on growth and refinement. Her vision is simple: keep creating a space where people feel welcomed, connected, and inspired.

“We’re rooted in Boone,” she said. “And we’re built for the journey.”

With the continued support of MEMBERS1st, Alison & Eric are well positioned for whatever comes next—proving that with the right vision and the right partner, great things can grow.
