Courtesy Pay

Courtesy Pay allows transactions to be processed even when funds are not available in your checking account – up to a certain limit. This means if you are trying to do a transaction from your checking account – whether it is with a debit or ATM card or as a withdrawal at a MEMBERS1st branch – but do not have enough funds, the credit union will allow the transaction to go through and your account to go negative with a courtesy pay fee.

Courtesy Pay program eligibility is specific to accounts with all of the following:

  • a membership with a checking account that’s been open for 60 days or longer
  • primary member is age 18 or older
  • direct deposit of at least $500 per month

Courtesy Pay FAQs

Courtesy Pay is a service that allows us to pay an item presented for payment against your checking account even if it causes the account to become overdrawn. This may include checks (share drafts), ACH, in-person withdrawals, ATM withdrawals, debit card and Bill Pay transactions.

Both of these services help protect you from NSF fees. However, the source of money is different.

With Courtesy Pay, you are essentially paying for a transaction based on future funds you will have in your account. Therefore, Courtesy Pay allows your account to go negative and the transaction to be completed, regardless of the type of transaction. You will then be charged a Courtesy Pay fee.

If you have Overdraft Protection and you do not have enough funds to complete a purchase with your debit card, funds are pulled from a line of credit or other account belonging to you to cover your transaction. However, Overdraft Protection does not cover PIN-generated transactions with your ATM or Debit card, nor does it allow you to withdrawal cash from your account if the funds are not available.

If eligible and up to a certain amount, decided by the credit union, your transaction is likely to be successful if you have Courtesy Pay set up on your account, regardless of the type of transaction (payment with a check, debit card with signature, debit or ATM card with PIN or a cash withdrawal).

It will go through if you are opted into overdraft protection and have it set up to either pull from a line of credit or another account belonging to you.
