- To ensure a safe, available blood supply, there is a need to increase the number of first-time donors.
- If a person lives to age 72, there is a 90% chance they will have a need for blood or blood products.

- Fifteen tests (eleven for infectious diseases) are performed on each unit of donated blood.
- Healthy people who are at least 16 years old and weigh at least 120 pounds are eligible to donate whole blood.
